A Few Important Things
This week has felt long, and arduous, and frankly a bit draining. I think when times feel like this, it is important to remind myself of a few things. Though there probably isn't anyone here to read this anymore, I know that it is important for me to write it down.
1.
I am valuable. Say it to yourself, then say it again. The traits you possess are important and meaningful, and they make you who you are. Own them. Understand that you are an essential part in the lives of those around you, that you are worth so much more than you may feel at times.
2.
I love who I am. For me, this often feels like a hard one to say out loud. Sometimes when I think it, it feels arrogant in my own mind. Self righteous, even. But the love you have for yourself is none of those things. The love you show yourself grows you, it makes you passionate and loving and empathetic. The way you love yourself flows into the way you are able to love others. Remind yourself of this often.
3.
It is okay for me to experience my emotions fully. So many times, we think it makes us stronger to simply reply that we are fine when someone reaches out. That even though they may know we are hurting, it makes us more respectable to brush it off. Remember that there is value in vulnerability. Talk about the way you feel, the reasons why you may be hurting. And in turn, remember to listen to others when they come to you. Stop trying to fix everything for people. Just listen. Acknowledge their feelings, allow them to be heard. Try to remember how good it feels when you are heard. Show that love to those around you. Be open, be honest. Be vulnerable.
4.
I will take responsibility for my actions. Hold yourself accountable for the things you do and the ways you make people feel. There is power in acknowledging when you are wrong. Own it, learn from your actions. Make your apologies more than just verbal. Be better to those around you.
5.
I am privileged. I do not remind myself of this enough. When we experience privilege our entire lives, it is easy to allow ourselves to become wrapped up in minuscule problems. Stop for a moment and recognize that it is your privilege to even view these things as problems. Work on being your best self, allow yourself to be positive and handle issues around you proactively. Be grateful, be appreciative. Thank others around you often, and mean it.
6.
I am doing better than I think I am. We are so quick to judge ourselves, to think of the ways we have failed, and we dwell on it. When we begin to forgive ourselves for our mistakes, we are able to grow from the experiences we have. On a mental level, understand that when you are hurting, everyday is progress. Feeling better than you did yesterday, allowing yourself to look towards the future rather than stay in the past. You are always doing better than you think you are.
7.
Love others fully and without hesitation. There is no power in being guarded. Allow yourself to be present, to recognize and appreciate those around you. Show love to strangers in the way that you hope others show love to the people you care about.
8.
Your empathy will always be so much more powerful than your anger. I have written about this before, but it is still so important to me. Put forth work to understanding those around you, to loving those around you. Think deeper than just yourself. We make a conscious choice in every situation to show empathy. Choose to lead with it.
9.
You are worthy. You are more than the way people treat you at times, you are more than your looks, and your clothes, and the car you drive. You are worthy of love. You are worthy of kindness. You are worthy of respect. Remind yourself of this, keep your standards for relationships high. Do not allow those around you to treat you as less than you deserve.
10.
Finally, I have learned that if you accept it, there is so much love in this world. In the places you least expect it, in the people you least expect it. If you look for it, it is all around us. Give back to the love you have received.
